Experience and Results
Experience
Alphonso attended Claflin University in Orangeburg, SC where he studied Sociology and Criminal Justice, earning a Bachelor’s degree. He began his law enforcement career as a corrections officer with the SCDC, where he was responsible for over 200 inmates a day. This experience shaped his perspective as a law enforcement professional. In this role, Alphonso learned the importance of treating all people with dignity and respect. Building a community and earning their trust isn’t done from behind a desk, it’s done by meeting people where they are, and listening.
Alphonso Small has over 13 years of experience in law enforcement, serving with the Hardeeville Police Department, Allendale Police Department, Hampton County Sheriff’s Office, Estill Police Department, and Fairfax Police Department. He was recruited for these positions, ranging from School Resource Officer, to Patrollman, and Detective due to his calm demeanor, steady leadership and work ethic. Later on, Alphonso was promoted to Lieutenant in the Estill Police Department. This breadth of experience taught him why good deputies leave, what makes them stay, and how to lead by example. That leadership is not about power of position, it's about responsibility, teamwork, and creating an environment where employees feel valued and supported. This is the experience and perspective that he will bring to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
